Selecting Your Floor Color

The floor is a good place to start when working your way into a new color scheme. Just like the ceiling the floor is one sixth of the surface area of the room and the covering you choose will have a major impact on the space available. You can either feel extremely comfortable or like climbing the walls all depending on your floor covering.

So what are your options if you move into a house which already has a floor covering with a color or texture which you do not like? The mood of the room will be completely changed by your choice of bedding, draperies, slipcovers and paint. Take inspiration from catalog photos, scraps of fabric or even your favorite piece of china and take it along to the paint store when you are searching for the right color of paint. Bring your selections home and put them all on the carpet to help you make your final choice. Test your chosen paint colors and pieces of poster board and this will help you to perfect the overall look of the room.

Then you should look for bedding and draperies which relate to your chosen wall color and include the carpet color as an accent. It is not necessary for such fabrics to match either the wall or the carpet color exactly. In fact, if the hues are alike and include a range of tones from dark to light, you'll have a more interesting combination and the fabrics will bridge that gap between the new wall color and the color of the old carpet.

Replace the Carpet
You will find you have no alternative but to replace the carpet it your floors are burnt orange shag from the 1970s but your favorite colors are really lavender and periwinkle blue. Wall-to-wall carpets are available in a wide selection of colors, patterns and textures. In order to narrow down your choices you need to decide how much impact you want the floor to have on the color scheme of the room.

Spreading color underfoot restricts the range of hues you can introduce for the walls and furnishings. If you remember, that is what created this problem in the first place! However, muted or light tones such as pale gray-blue or sage green can actually be surprisingly versatile.

Look for a color which appears in your draperies or upholstery when choosing the color of your wall to wall carpet. Go for a lighter shade to open up the space of the room or a darker shade to make the room cozier. In a south or west facing room, blue will be a more refreshing color choice as a warm color will make the room feel too hot.

A carpet combining color and pattern gives the room a strong personality. Floral patterns may be formal or informal, depending upon the design. If there are children or pets in your household, patterns are great as they hide all manner of spills and stains.

If you prefer not to commit to a particular color then opt for a neutral shade. Once again a light neutral will make the room appear more spacious and attention will be focused on the furnishings more than the floor. Neutrals with specks of dark brown or taupe like Berbers or something similar work well in areas of high traffic as they tend not to show the dirt.

If money is no object then wool carpets may be for you but as far as durability and stain resistance is concerned, nylon is best. However, if you like the look and comfort of wool but need the qualities of nylon go for an 80/20 blend of wool and nylon which is more easily affordable than 100% wool.

There it was. A beautiful cabinet that stood tall and deep with a beautiful wood grain finish that was as smooth as glass to the touch. Large deep shelves made up the bulk of the cabinet. There is a certain feeling that nothing else can match when you create something beautiful out of a chunk of wood. Woodworking is a relatively inexpensive and ready source of material that instills pride and a sense of accomplishment to the woodworker as he or she creates and finishes a given project. Woodworking can also be a therapeutic source of relief after a stressful days work. Few things in life offer the satisfaction of woodworking!

A Brief History of Woodworking

Woodworking as a craft can be traced back as far as the Egyptian and Chinese civilizations. Ancient Egyptians created pieces of furniture from wood and these have been found preserved in tombs. Mortise and tendon joints are attested as early as 3100 BC. Ancient Chinese furniture is famous for its intricate glueless and nailless joinery. Today with advancements in tools, materials and the availability of easy-to-follow plans, anyone can experience the satisfaction and joy of woodworking!

Wood Types

Time and space for this article does not allow for an in-depth discussion of the best wood types to be used; however most woodworking projects fall into three different categories; softwoods, hardwoods and plywood, the latter being manufactured panels. Most beginning woodworkers start out using softwoods. The more common softwoods come from trees that are cone-bearing, such as evergreens. Softwood such as pine and spruce are easy to work with and don't require expensive tools to obtain a good result. Most softwood tends to absorb moisture when left in the outside weather, so a durable finish should be used when creating outdoor projects.

Hardwood comes from trees that shed their foliage annually. The more common hardwoods are cherry, oak, poplar, walnut, maple, ash and birch. Stains and clear finish coatings accentuate the grain patterns of hardwoods better than softwood, thereby making hardwood a desired material for high quality furniture and smaller pieces of art. Cutting and working with hardwoods require more expensive and very sharp tools.

Plywood is made from uneven layers of wood laminated together or a type of manufactured sheet. Plywood can be purchased with a thin finished layer of hardwood called 'veneers' and are great for cabinet or large pieces requiring flat surfaces. Advancements in manufacturing and technology have allowed for the production of 'man-made' wood materials; however for the purpose of this article we prefer to stick with nature's wood.

Working with Nature's Wood

Most wood that is available for purchasing today has already been dried and ready for woodworking. Freshly cut wood needs to 'season' for a minimum of six months in a specially prepared dry environment, so for this article we will address working with wood that has already been properly dried.

Choosing the right wood for your project is critical to the look of the finished product. For the sake of argument, we are assuming you want your finished project to show off the natural grain of the wood. A great source for previewing different wood species before you make your final selection can be found at Woodworker's Central.com. Woodworker's Central has an online directory exhibiting some of the world's most popular woods with a full-sized photo for each species.

Smoothing wood prior to applying finish coatings is best done by sanding. Sandpaper is available in grit sizes. Sandpaper with a larger grit is best for removing rough or dented areas, while paper with a smaller or finer grit works well to get a final smooth surface. Generally the harder the wood species, the more sanding that will be required. For projects that require a lot of sanding, there are many different power tools from which to choose.

For a natural look to the final finish, a clear coat of varnish should be applied using a soft brush. A deeper rich finish can be accomplished by applying several thin coats of varnish. Each coat should be allowed to dry before applying the next. Sanding between each coat with a fine grit sanding paper will help bring out the luster of the final finish. Commercial stains are also available for adding color and bringing out the natural grain of the wood. Stain should be applied in even coats. Deeper color can be achieved with multiple coats, however each coat should be allowed time to soak into the grain. Once the desire color is achieved, a final clear hard coat of varnish, lacquer or shellac can be applied to preserve the finish.
